Congress groups almost come to blows

CHITRADURGA, FEB. 26. Two groups of Congress workers almost came to blows at the party office in Challakere town on Thursday. The party observer, Shafi Ahmed, was present.

According to an eyewitness account, the two groups, one supporting Sudhakar, member of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, and the other supporting Laxmikanth, both aspirants for the party ticket for the Challakere Assembly segment, got into an argument over a petty issue.

However, a fight was averted when other workers stopped them from coming to blows, the eyewitness said.

It was said that a large number of followers of Laxmikanth tried to get into a room where Mr. Ahmed was hearing the workers. The supporters of Sudhakar tried to stop Laxmikanth's followers leading to the argument. The two groups then started abusing each other.

The party leaders told The Hindu that the Sudhakar group claimed that the men who tried to enter the room were not party workers and they were not even from the constituency.

Intervention by police and senior leaders averted further damage. According to police sources, Thimmanna of the group supporting Laxmikanth has lodged a complaint.
