Compensation released to survivors of accident

MYSORE: The Deputy Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah, on Monday visited the government hospital in Hunsur and handed over compensation to the two persons who survived Friday's tragedy at Basarikatte in which seven persons travelling in a bullock cart were electrocuted.

Expressing sorrow and anguish over the accident, Mr. Siddaramaiah inquired about the condition of Manjula and Suresh who sustained burns but survived the accident.

Seven of the nine persons, who were on their way to attend a wedding feast, were electrocuted when the bullock cart came in contact with a live electric wire. Mr. Siddaramaiah gave away Rs. 10,000 to Manjula and Suresh and also compensated the owner of the bullock cart.

Mr. Siddaramaiah instructed the electricity company staff to identify all electricity poles in the State that needs reinforcement to prevent them from collapsing under heavy winds or rainfall.

Repairs should be taken up on priority before the monsoon sets in, he added.

An inquiry has been ordered to find out whether Friday's incident was an accident or it occurred due to the negligence of Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply Company personnel.
