`Clear the way for steel plants'

Staff Correspondent

RAICHUR: The Raichur Chamber of Commerce and Industry has urged the Government to facilitate early setting up of steel plants at the growth centre here.

Welcoming the announcement of proposals on two mega steel plants in Raichur being cleared, Mylapur N. Murthy, chamber secretary, said the Government has done the right thing by clearing the proposals of Ispat Industries Ltd. and Surana Industries Ltd. to establish their steel projects. Mr. Murthy said 15 years ago, the Government had established a growth centre here on a 2,000-acre land on the State Highway No. 23 towards Hyderabad. Successive governments had not taken steps to encourage industries.

Ispat Industries Ltd. plans to set up a Rs. 7,100-crore integrated steel plant on 2,500 acres of land in the district. The plant will employ 2,000 people. Surana Industries Ltd. proposes to set up a Rs. 562-crore steel plant which will employ 1,350 people.
