Chief Minister urged to expedite Upper Bhadra project

CHITRADURGA: N.Y. Hanumanthappa, Member of Parliament, has urged Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh to expedite the implementation of the Upper Bhadra Project.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, he congratulated the Government for its positive response to the long-pending demand of the people of Chitradurga, and for according administrative approval for the Upper Bhadra Project, which is estimated to cost about Rs. 2,800 crores.

The project proposes to collect 20 tmcft of water in the reservoir and provide the same to drought-prone areas of Tarikere, Kadur of Chikmagalur district and areas under Hosadurga, Holalkere , Hiriyur, Challakere, Molakalmuru, Jagalur and Chitradurga taluks of Chitradurga district. It is the confirmed opinion of experts that no village will be submerged as a result of the project. Not much forest and bio-diversity is also threatened according to expert opinion, he said.

He termed opposition to the project from some leaders of Shimoga and Chikmagalur districts as "unfortunate." He defended the demand of the people of Chitradurga district as just and reasonable.
