Chief Minister to open ice plant

UDUPI: Managing Director of the Dakshina Kannada and Udupi Districts Cooperative Fish Marketing Federation Y. Gangadhar Suvarna said on Thursday that Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will inaugurate an ice plant built at a cost of Rs. 62 lakhs on the Malpe port premises on Saturday. Addressing presspersons here, Mr. Suvarna said the capacity of the ice plant is 30 tonnes. There already exists a 10-tonne ice plant at Malpe, he said. The Union Ministry of Agriculture had sanctioned Rs. 50 lakhs for the 30-tonne ice plant, with the federation contributing Rs. 12 lakhs. There are three rooms in the ground and first floors in the new ice plant complex. The federation also intends to set up an ice plant on the Mangalore port premises. In the last six years, the federation has made a profit of Rs. 1.04 crores, he said. It is planning to set up three fishmeal plants at an estimated cost of Rs. 3 crores, he added.
