DAVANGERE: JUNE 13. The Centre has sanctioned Rs. 1.40 lakhs to Davangere Zilla Panchayat under the "Sampoorna Nirmalya Andolana" (comprehensive sanitation drive) to build 100 community toilets at various places in the district. Since this is a joint programme of the Union and State governments, the State Government is yet to contribute its share of Rs. 54 lakhs.

The Planning Officer, Venkataramanappa, who addressed a review meeting here on Monday, said the zilla panchayat proposed to build 500 community toilets in the district at a cost of Rs. 20 crores as many houses, anganawadi centres and schools did not have toilets. But the Centre pruned the number of toilets to 100 and fixed the cost at Rs. 8 crores, he said.

A committee of 17 members, headed by the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, will monitor implementation of the project. One-third of the panel members are women. Bankar Veerupakshappa, chairman of the Standing Committee on Health and Education, took exception to the "unilateral decisions" of the Deputy Director of Public Instruction, Shantha Raju. Mr. Raju said he had merely implemented the Government's instructions.
