BJP using Siddaramaiah’s name to create rift: Deve Gowda

Janata Dal (Secular) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of using former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s name “as a tool” to create differences between the coalition partners.

He was speaking on the occasion of the JD(S)-Congress coalition government turning 100 days old. Mr. Gowda told The Hindu that the BJP would not succeed in its ploy. “As Mr. Siddaramaiah is opposed to the BJP’s divisive politics, BJP has said that Mr. Siddaramaiah’s phone was being tapped. How did they discover this? It is a conspiracy to create a rift between us and the Congress,” he said.

Seeking to play down the perceived differences between coalition partners, Mr. Gowda expressed confidence over the government completing its five-year term. “Whatever the differences, the coalition parties will not allow BJP to come to power in Karnataka,” he said. Both the Congress and JD(S) will sink their differences for the “greater cause of keeping BJP out of power,” he said.

Commending the “mature manner” in which Congress president Rahul Gandhi was taking forward the national party, Mr. Gowda said: “Mr. Gandhi is actively leading the party. He understands the importance of coalition politics and will intervene whenever and wherever necessary to clear misunderstandings between the Congress and JD(S). I’m confident of sorting out differences in the coalition government by speaking to Mr. Gandhi and senior AICC leaders.” He said that the government had done commendable work in 100 days. “Much of the time has been spent on addressing initial hiccups. However, a decision to waive farm loans and the plan of promulgating an ordinance to waive loans of landless agricultural labourers borrowed from moneylenders is historic,” he said.
