Women arrested on cheating charge

She promised people sites, houses and jobs The accused is involved in 23 cases in the State

Raichur: The Raichur Police have registered a criminal case against B.M. Parvathi, a native of Belgal village in Bellary district, and arrested her on Tuesday on charge of cheating the public with regard to allotment of open sites and houses and offering jobs in government departments. She has been remanded to judicial custody.

In a statement here on Tuesday, B.A. Padmanayana, Superintendent of Police, said the police arrested Parvathi following a complaint lodged by Balakrishan, professor at the Government Ayurvedic Medical College, Mysore, at the Sadar Bazar Police station here.

On interrogation, the accused confessed that she had cheated people in Bangalore, Mysore, Bellary, Bidar, Belgaum and many other places in the State by offering them open sites, houses and jobs. She said cheated people of crores of rupees, Mr. Padmanayana said.

He said that the accused had cheated Dr. Balakrishna by collecting a demand draft for Rs.14 lakh and some cash promising that she would help him to get a site at the Judicial Layout in Yelhanka in Bangalore. On investigation, the police found that the accused was involved in 23 cheating cases across the State.

He informed that the police had learnt that the accused had opened two savings accounts and had lockers at a cooperative bank in Adoni in Andhra Pradesh where she deposited more than Rs. 2 crore. Further investigation revealed that she had opened savings accounts and possessed lockers in a number of banks in Bangalore. The police have seized her bank accounts and lockers at Adoni, he said.

Mr. Padmanayana said a special team of police has been constituted to visit Bangalore, Mysore, Tumkur, Bellary and other places for further investigation.
