Bangalore: Insured patients in the United States now have a choice of travelling to Bangalore for advanced surgical procedures and affordable medical treatment.

The Columbia-based Companion Global Healthcare, one of the largest health insurance companies in the U.S., has recognised and added Wockhardt Hospitals in Bangalore and Mumbai to its overseas hospitals network.

Vishal Bali, chief executive officer of the hospital group, said the hospitals, which had been accredited by Joint Commission International (JCI) of the U.S., were surveyed by the insurance company for the last one year and the credentialing process was completed recently.

This association will help patients in the U.S. get medical care at a fraction of the cost in their country, he said.

Wockhardt is one of the 13 hospitals in India that have a JCI accreditation.

The latest Deloitte study on medical tourism estimates that 7,50,000 Americans travelled abroad for healthcare in 2007. Of these, 4,50,000 visited India for quality and affordable healthcare services last year.
