Water Sports at Unkal Tank

DHARWAD: A five-day Water Sports event has been organised at Unkal Tank in Hubli from Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Darpan Jain told presspersons here on Friday that the district administration, the Department of Sports and Youth Services and the General Thimmaiah National Adventure Academy were organising the event jointly.

Mr. Jain said that during the event water skiing, canoeing, water scooter surfing and other water adventure sports would be conducted. As many as 25 experts would train and educate people on water sports.

He said 500 people were likely to participate in the event everyday.

Minister for Sports and Youth Services Minister Gulihatti Shekhar would inaugurate the event on Saturday, he said.

The Deputy Commissioner said that the district administration was taking up development of Kelageri Tank, Navalur Tank and Unkal Tank.

To a query, he said because of poor quality of work, the contract awarded for the development of Sadhanakeri Tank had been cancelled.

He said a proposal requesting the Union Government to release Rs. 2.6 crore for the remaining work on the development of Sadhanakeri Tank had been sent and steps would be taken to complete the work within six months once the grants were released.

Mr. Jain said that the development of Sanjivini Park located between Hubli and Dharwad was under progress and there was a plan to develop the bird sanctuary at Navalurugudda.

Projects were also being chalked out for development of Neerasagar in Dummawada, Neelamana Kere at Navalgund, Doddakere in Kalghatgi taluk and the tank adjacent to the Sawai Gandharva Memorial in Kundgol, he said.
