Ramachandra Gowda inaugurates taluk Kannada sahitya sammelan

VIRAJPET (KODAGU DISTRICT): Minister for Science and Technology and Kodagu district in-charge Ramachandra Gowda has promised the people of the district here that he will strive to solve their problems by taking them up with Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy, in consultation with MLAs and MLC from Kodagu.

He was inaugurating the Virajpet taluk Kannada sahitya sammelan organised on a here on Saturday.

To the demands made by Virajpet MLA H.D. Basavaraj, who had stated earlier that landholders in Kodagu should be given rights over trees grown on their land and over "Jamma Bane" land, Mr. Gowda said the State Government was committed to solving their problems.

Mr. Basavaraj urged Mr. Kumaraswamy, who could not attend the function, to take steps to improve the lot of tribal people living in Kodagu, grant land to ex-servicemen, fill vacancies in government departments, take steps to end the elephant menace and release funds for the development of roads.

He said a special "Road fund" should be set up for Kodagu in line with the recommendations of the Nanjundappa Committee report. Lauding the scale and manner in which the sammelan was organised, Mr. Gowda said functions such as this would help discuss people's problems and enable the Government to attend to them.

Power supply

With regard to poor power supply and the problem of low voltage in the district, Mr. Gowda said he would impress upon those concerned not to impose cuts or resort to load shedding in Kodagu since the district consumed the least amount of power in the entire State.

The fact that the Kannada Sahitya Parishat was established in Kodagu in 1915 spoke of the love people in the district had for Kannada. President of the sammelan K. Keshava Bhat was taken in an open jeep in the procession. Mr. Basavaraj, Madikeri MLA K.G. Bopaiah, president of the Kodagu Kannada Sahitya Parishat T.P. Ramesh, president of the Virajpet taluk Kannada Sahitya Parishat B.G. Raghunath Naik and president of the Gonicoppa APMC Bose Devaiah accompanied him.

Books released

"Omkara Vaibhava" by Vishnu Bhat was released by Kannada and Culture Minister H.S. Mahadevprasad, "Vasanta Matte Chiguritu" by Chippi Cariappa was released by Balraj, Kollegal MLA, and a book on nature paintings by B.R. Satish, was released by president of the Kannada Development Authority Siddalingaiah.


A procession taken out in the morning from the Mariyamma temple to the taluk maidan, venue of the function, was a major attraction. Cultural troupes such as "Nandi Dhwaja", "Puja Kunita", "Dollu Kunita", "Chande", "Dummy Dance", "Valaga" and "Bhoota Kola" attracted a large crowd.

The NCC units, Scouts and Guides and stree shakti groups added glitter to the show. Traffic in Virajpet town came to a standstill.
