Very few takers for seed potato

Problem of plenty: Farmers are going slow on the purchase of seed potato as they are yet to recover from last year’s disaster, wherein the crop was hit by blight. Huge stocks of seed potato at the APMC Yard in Hassan indicate this cautiousness.

Merchants complain of poor business despite a price reduction

HASSAN: Over 17,000 tonnes of seed potato have been kept in 11 cold storages in and around Hassan city, and following the delay in rain, there are few buyers of the tuber at the Hassan APMC yard. Merchants at the yard told The Hindu on Tuesday that earlier, they had fixed the price of seed potato at Rs. 1,100 for a 50-kg bag. Now they were selling it at Rs. 1,040. Despite the price reduction, there were less buyers. Some farmers who were earlier buying 10 bags at a time were now buying only two, they said.

Farmers, who lost potato crop last year to blight, are now cautious. Some are even planning to sow only half the area and the remaining will be worked upon only after seeing results. Merchants are, however, hopeful that once the monsoon begins, they will make good business.

Joint Director for Agriculture Mahesh Gowda told The Hindu that 15,000 tonnes of complex fertilizer were available and 50 per cent of it would be sold through cooperative societies.
