GULBARGA: The birth anniversary of 12th century social reformer Basaveshwara was celebrated in Gulbarga district on Thursday.

The celebrations organised by the district administration were low-key. Deputy Commissioner Pankajkumar Pandey and Superintendent of Police Manish Kharbhikar garlanded the statue of Basaveshwara.

The celebrations organised by the Basava Samithi were inaugurated by Sri Sidda Basava Kabeer. A procession was taken out from Nehru Gunj to Jagat Circle. Processions and discourses on Basava philosophy marked the celebrations in other areas.

Basava Jayanti was celebrated in Bidar by various organisations. Members of the Basava Jayanthi Utsava Samiti took out a procession carrying Basaveshwara’s portrait.



Candidates of various parties including Congress nominee Gurupadappa Nagamarapalli, Raghunathrao Malkapure of the BJP (both contesting the Bidar seat), Bandeppa Kashempur of the Janata Dal (Secular) and Sanjay Kheny, BJP candidate in Bidar South Constituency took part in the celebrations.

Cultural programmes were organised in the evening at Ganesh Maidan. The statue of Basaveshwara at Basaveshwara Circle was decorated as part of the celebrations.

At the Janata Dal (Secular) office, a “puja” was performed in front of a portrait of Basaveshwara. President of party’s district unit Baburao Gudge and party nominee for Bidar seat Rajashri Swami were among those who were present. Celebrations were held in the taluks too.
