Irate group assaults returning officer

JD(S) member declared president

Raichur: The police fired teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse an irate mob that indulged in stone throwing over an issue related to the election of president and vice-president of the Deosugur Gram Panchayat on Saturday.

Several people, including Circle Inspector Ramesh Mti, were injured in stone throwing.

Tension prevailed at Deosugur village, 20 km from Raichur, soon after the results of the election were declared.

A group of Janata Dal (Secular) supporters led by Kadgol Anjeneya, Chairman of the Raichur Development Authority, Suresh Malipatil and M.M. Patil, started throwing stones at Congress workers who were coming out of the polling booth at Deosugur after Returning Officer Khaja announced the election of Muthamma as president and Mahadevappa as vice-president of the gram panchayat.

In the 55-member gram panchayat, Congress has 30 members, while the rest are from the Janata Dal (S). The Janata Dal (S) members raised objections against the announcement of the results alleging that the Returning Officer had manipulated the voters’ scroll, denying the election of Krishna as president.

The situation deteriorated when the irate group entered the polling booth and assaulted the Returning Officer and threw stones at policemen when Mr. Meti arrived there.

The police fired teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge and brought the situation under control.

Recounting

Later, Raichur Tahsildar Suryanarayana held a meeting with the Returning Officer, who in turn ordered recounting of votes and announced the election of Mr. Krishna as president of the panchayat.

Meanwhile, Congress members lodged a complaint with Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer Anees Siraj alleging that the Returning Officer had manipulated the results of the election at the behest of former Minister and Kalmala MLA Muniyappa Muddappa.
