Raichur: Water from the Tungabhadra reservoir in Munirabad of Koppal district was released at 13,000 cusecs on Tuesday following heavy rainfall in the catchment areas in the past few days.

According to sources from the Tungabhadra dam control room, the water from the reservoir was being discharged through 33 crest gates of the dam. Last year the discharge of water from the reservoir began on July 30.

The inflow in the reservoir was at 1,38,110 cusecs on Tuesday morning following continuous rainfall in the catchment area. The release of water began on Monday evening after puja at the dam site.

The water-level in the reservoir has now reached almost to its full level. However, the reservoir level is being maintained at 1,631.55 ft. as against the Full Reservoir Level (FRL) of 1,633 ft. The authorities said the gap of about 1.45 ft. was maintained as “cushioning” for the safety of the reservoir. With the available capacity of 111 tmcft, the total gross storage in the reservoir on Tuesday was 99.648 tmcft as against 39.198 tmcft in the corresponding period last year.

The authorities have issued warning to people living in the low-lying areas in the downstream of the river to shift to safer places.

The district administration at Koppal has asked the tahsildar of Gangavathi taluk to submit a report to it after studying the situation in villages along the riverside and take steps to shift the affected people to safer places.

The district administration at Raichur has also issued similar instructions to the tahsildars of Sindhanur and Manvi taluks.
