Stop acquiring fertile land: SUCI

Members of the Socialist Unity Centre of India (SUCI) on Friday took out a procession and staged a protest against the indiscriminate acquisition of farmers' land for industrialisation.

Activists led by T.S. Suneet Kumar, member of the State working committee of the SUCI, went in a procession from the Ambedkar Circle to the tahsildar's office where they submitted a memorandum.

Addressing the gathering Mr. Kumar alleged that the BJP Government in the State was adopting anti-farmer policies and the administration was corrupt. The Government is acquiring fertile farmland, which is later denotified to facilitate the ruling party leaders to grab it. The authorities of the Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board (KIADB) have been functioning as middlemen to fulfil the desires of the corrupt politicians.

Mr. Kumar alleged that the previous Governments led by the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) had also followed similar practices and cheated the farmers by relaxing the Land Ceiling Act.

He said that the KIADB should be abolished to stop indiscriminate acquisition of farmland for industrialisation. And, land acquired by the KIADB should be returned to the farmers from whom it was acquired. And a probe should be ordered into the land scam so that the guilty are brought to book.
