State's handlooms up for grabs

There has been a revival of interest in handloom products. Cashing in on this and to provide a market for handloom weavers co-operative societies, the Vastrachittara Karnataka Handloom Expo 2010, will commence on August 13 in the city.

On the shelves are cotton, woollen and silk handloom products, Molakalmuru silk saris, Ilkal silk and cotton saris registered under the Geographical Indication Act, along with silk and cotton handloom products of the Karnataka Handloom Development Corporation (Priyadarshini brand), Udupi cotton saris, Kinhal carpets, Guledgud khana, kambali, shawls and shirting from 40 handloom agencies from across the State.

There is a 20 per cent discount as the purchase is directly from weavers.

Pandurang B. Nayak, Commissioner for Textile Development and Director of Handloom and Textiles, in a release, said the exhibition had been organised to help handloom products compete with mill products.

The exhibition will be inaugurated by Textiles Minister Goolihatti D. Shekar.

It will be held at Chowdeshwari Kalyana Mantapa, West of Chord Road, near Vijayanagar Tollgate, Rajajinagar, and will be on till August 20.
