HASSAN: In a bid to popularise adventure sports in the State, the Department of Youth Services and Sports in association with the District Youth Services and Sports Department and the General Thimmaiah Academy of Adventure conducted a three-day adventure sports festival on parasailing and boating.

Training in parasailing was conducted at the Bhuvanahalli airport, boating in Dwara Samudra and rock climbing on the Ranganatha Swamy hills in Halebid.

Exposure

Speaking to The Hindu on Wednesday, Saumya, a trainer at the academy, said that such camps were aimed at encouraging youth to take up adventure sports and also provide exposure to youth from rural areas.

Training was provided free, she said. To join the regular training camps, youth would have to pay Rs. 150 and register with the District Sports and Youth Services Department, she said.

If 40 people were enrolled, then the academy would train them for five days at their native places, by utilising local facilities, they said.

Regular training is conducted by the academy on the Cauvery, the Kali (at Barpole in Kodagu) the Seetha (at Chikmagalur) and the Tunga (at Shimoga) rivers.
