Special group of doctors for VIP duty likely

Bangalore: The State Government is likely to set up a separate VIP squad for medical duty during the visits of important people to the city. This follows a report in The Hindu on Saturday, official sources in the Government said.

The report highlighted how specialist treatment is delayed to patients in government hospitals every time a VIP visits the city. This is because a retinue of government doctors, including orthopaedic specialists, has to accompany the cavalcade and be on call till the visit ends.

Sources said that Vice-President Hamid Ansari, who is in the city now, had taken note of the story and directed the authorities to immediately withdraw the services of orthopaedic surgeons posted for VIP duty during his visit.

“As desired by the Vice-President, the services of orthopaedic surgeons posted on VIP duty during the current visit have been withdrawn,” stated a press release issued by the Medical Superintendent of Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital.

“The posting of doctors on VIP duties is always done without hampering the routine work, including the specialist services of the hospital,” the release added.
