Staff Correspondent

MYSORE: Sowing is under way at a brisk pace in Mysore district. Incidentally, sowing begins much earlier in Mysore district compared to other districts since the South-West Monsoon first hits Mysore district and then spreads across the State.

Thanks to torrential rains in the district, 60 per cent of sowing has been completed in rain-fed areas and sowing is in progress in the remaining areas.

Joint Director of Agriculture Vishakanta said that 3.40 lakh hectare of rain-fed land will come under cultivation this season in addition to 1lakh hectare of irrigated land.

Cotton, tobacco and ragi are predominantly grown in the district followed by pulses, cereals and other crops. This season, 50,000 acres of cotton, 65,000 hectares of ragi and 60,000 hectares of tobacco will come under cultivation.
