Slum dwellers demand basic amenities

Authorities asked to provide toilets and asphalt roads

MYSORE: Members of the Karnataka Kolegeri Nivasigala Samyukta Sanghatane (KKNSS) here on Monday took out a procession and staged a dharna in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner urging the Government to provide basic amenities in slums in various parts of the city.

They submitted memoranda to the Commissioner, Mysore City Corporation, and the Deputy Commissioner. In the memorandum, they urged the Government to declare Vandmataram Yallamma settlements and areas adjoining Bannimantap and Industrial units as "official" slums.

They asked the authorities to construct houses under the Slum Clearance Programme and distribute them among beneficiaries.

Detailing the plight of slum dwellers, they said slums in the city, including Vandemataram and Yellamma settlements, did not have basic amenities and people were facing hardships because of this.

They have requested the corporation authorities to construct at least 100 toilets, asphalt roads and drill borewells.

The have also appealed the revenue authorities to issue Below Poverty Line (BPL) cards to slum dwellers.
