SHIMOGA: Seven youths from Harihar who were on a trip to the Jog Falls were trapped downstream of the Linganamakki reservoir on Saturday when water was released from the dam.

Rescue teams were finding it difficult to reach the spot because of the heavy discharge of water from the 11 crest gates of the dam.

The gates were closed in the evening to reduce the discharge. Some of the trapped youths climbed trees while others were perched precariously on slippery rocks midstream.

The incident happened around 3 p.m. when the youths were at Jogimath near the Bombay Tourist Bungalow.

It is located behind the waterfalls and is known as the “Mungaru Male” spot (it was where the breathtaking scene of the Jog Falls in the popular Kannada film “Mungaru Male” was shot). They were caught unawares when water, released at 11,000 cusecs from the reservoir, came gushing downstream.

Police and Fire Services personnel from Shimoga and Uttara Kannada districts are engaged in the rescue effort.
