BANGALORE: Eleven owners whose lorries were used to transport sand from the Kanva river bed in Chennapatna in Ramanagar taluk have moved the Karnataka High Court against what they termed was a levy of steep fine on them by the tahsildar.

The petitioners said the Chennapatna tahsildar had levied fines of Rs. 1 lakh on each lorry saying that they were transporting sand illegally and were mining it without permit.

On its part, the government advocate said illegal sand mining was rampant on Kanva river bed.

About 300 to 400 lorries transported sand from Chennapatna every day and that the heavy load that they carried was damaging the roads.

Justice Anand Byrareddy adjourned hearing of the case.

A Division Bench of the Karnataka High Court comprising Chief Justice P.D. Dinakaran and Justice V. G. Sabhahit on Wednesday directed the registry to post before a Special Bench a case by some former High Court judges against the Judicial Employees’ House Building Cooperative Society.
