Chitradurga: The postponement of the 75th Kannada Sahitya Sammelan seems to have failed to dampen the spirit of people here.

The prestigious four-day event, which was scheduled to begin on January 29, has been put off by a week, as the nation is observing a week’s mourning following the death of the former President R. Venkataraman.

In a hurriedly convened press conference here on Tuesday night, State Kannada Sahitya Parishat President R.K. Nallur Prasad said that owing to the nationwide mourning, the sammelan would be held from February 4. “As it is not possible to hold cultural events during the mourning period, the parishat has decided to postpone the event,” he said. He, however, made it clear that there would be no change in the programmes planned.

Although some people were disappointed following the announcement, they eventually felt the delay would give the organisers more time to prepare.

The decision to hold the sammelan was taken on December 1, 2008, which gave the district administration less than two months to get prepared. However, the administration, along with the district Kannada Sahitya Parishat, worked hard to ensure that all work would be completed on time. M. Vilas, a college lecturer, said, “We are indeed a little disappointed, but on a more positive note, the district administration will get some more time to prepare for the event. At least the infrastructure in Chitradurga has now improved owing to this event.”

A similar opinion was expressed by D.S. Venkatappa, a restaurant owner, who said the postponement had given more time to the district to tie up loose ends. With regard to sweets already prepared, the Murugharajendra Math, which is in charge of catering, has said they would be given to students. Deputy Commissioner Amlan Aditya Biswas told The Hindu that schools and colleges, which had been asked to remain closed during the sammelan, would now be asked to function on these few days.
