Samiti demands repair of highway

Staff Correspondent

Madikeri: The “Raste Horata Samanvaya Samiti” will stage a dharna in front of the office of the tahsildar in Virajpet town on November 21 in protest against the district administration’s failure to repair the Virajpet-Makutta road.

Speaking to presspersons here on Monday, president of the samiti Prithvinath said that the road had become unusable. It was the main inter-State highway connecting Kodagu with Kerala, and it had been in this state for several years now. As a result, transportation of commodities such as coffee, cardamom and pepper to Kerala had stopped, he said.

Medical facilities

Many people had to go to Kerala for medical care. Trade links between Kodagu and Kerala had suffered and road accidents had increased in the recent past. This had also deprived much-needed revenue to the State from trade, Mr. Prithvinath said. He charged the local MLA and MLC with making hollow promises to the people on repair of the road. The duo had stated that several crores of rupees had been sanctioned for repair work.

Rs. 10 lakh released

The Deputy Commissioner released Rs. 10 lakh from the Calamity Relief Fund recently for repair of the road, but it was not even sufficient to fill potholes. Sabarimala pilgrims had also been hit.

Mr. Prithvinath urged Deputy Commissioner K.R. Niranjan to inspect the road and take immediate steps to have it repaired. If the district administration did not respond, the samiti would intensify its struggle for justice, he said. Samiti members Pathak Mohammad, Sainath and K.B. Haris were present.
