Rs. 30 lakh-worth goods stolen in first quarter

Bijapur: In the first three months of 2009, the district has recorded 19 cases of murder, a case each of dacoity and chain snatching, 35 cases of thefts, two rape cases, 24 atrocity cases and 71 accident cases, Superintendent of Police Arun Chakravarthy said here recently.

According to him, goods worth Rs. 30.19 lakh were stolen and the police have recovered items worth Rs. 11.78 lakh. Mr. Chakravarthy said that four cases of vehicle theft were reported in the district in 2007 in which ten motorcycles and two autorickshaws worth Rs. 1,69,000 were stolen. In 2008, the number of vehicle theft went up to nine in which 14 motorcycles, one jeep and a tractor worth Rs. 7.98 lakh were stolen.

In the first three months of 2009, the district recorded two theft cases in which 26 motorcycles and one jeep worth Rs. 7.75 lakh were stolen.

During the same period, the police arrested 33 persons involved in dacoity, robbery and theft cases and have recovered goods worth Rs 11.64 lakh.
