Rs. 1,571 crore for backward taluks

Special Correspondent

MYSORE: The State Government has allocated Rs. 1,571 crore for the development of 114 backward taluks to address the problem of regional imbalances during the current financial year.

State Planning Board deputy chairman A. Ravindra said here on Wednesday that the taluks had been listed in the Nanjundappa committee’s report on regional imbalances.

In Mysore district, H.D. Kote had been categorised under most backward taluks, he said.

Hunsur, Nanjangud and T. Narsipura had been listed as more backward taluks, while K.R. Nagar and Periyapatna had been categorised under backward taluks, said Mr. Ravindra.

He was speaking to presspersons after holding a review meeting with officials and pointed out that problems in each taluk were specific to that region.

Mr. Ravindra hinted at a drinking water crisis looming large and said though the water situation was satisfactory, there was a need for long-term planning to redress the issue.
