Madikeri: The credit of enriching the fields of literature, music and culture of Karnataka should belong to Purandaradasa, Kodagu Deputy Commissioner M.K. Baladevakrishna has said.

He was addressing a gathering at the Cauvery Kalakshetra here on Tuesday where Purandarotsava was organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture, according to a press release here on Wednesday.

Quality of life

Purandaradasa made an attempt to raise the quality of life of the people by preaching messages to eradicate the vices of casteism, he said.

He also tried to do away with superstitious beliefs held by the people then, Mr. Baladevakrishna recalled.

Programmes to remember the contributions of Purandaradasa being held in Kodagu were laudable.

Subraya Sampaje from the Madikeri All India Radio Station said that Purandaradasa said exhorted the people that human life was invaluable and that it should not be frittered away.

He had spoken about the essence of life.

The sage-poet had stated that everybody should remain optimistic about life and exercise control over tongue, temper and temptations. These watchwords were relevant for all times, he said.

President of the Madikeri City Municipal Council P.D. Ponnappa presided over the function.

Public Works Department Executive Engineer Chandrashekar was present. Kondaiahdas and K. Vittaladas rendered works of Purandaradasa. Assistant Director of the Department of Kannada and Culture Damodar welcomed the gathering.
