Protest against factory’s closure

Staff Reporter

Bangalore: A large number of garment workers under the aegis of the Garment Workers Union, Karnataka, on Saturday staged a protest against the closure of Konega International.

The Union said the closure of the factory without any notice had thrown 900 workers on the street.

Union president K.S. Melukote said the workers, of whom a majority are women, have been rendered jobless.

The factory had failed to provide statutory benefits to employees and had not paid salaries since August, he alleged.

‘Intervene’

Mr. Melukote urged the Government to intervene and ensure that the factory is re-opened and the salaries and other benefits are paid.
