Probe sought into boy’s death

BANGALORE: Activists associated with over 30 non-governmental organisations held a dharna here on Wednesday and demanded a judicial probe into the death of 13-year-old boy who was found dead in the government-run boys’ remand home on Hosur Road on August 4.

Bangalore Forum for Street and Working Children convenor I.S. Patil said the Bala Mandir on Hosur Road lacked basic amenities and did not have enough staff. “When the incident took place, the supervisors and others officials of the home were absent except a watchman.

There are 160 students in the home and there is no requisite staff,” he alleged.

He said the boy had died under “mysterious circumstances” and the incidence raised doubts about his death. “It is the responsibility of the officials concerned to ascertain the reason for death. A thorough investigation will reveal the reason for the mysterious death,” he said.

Niranjana Aradhya of Makkala Hakkugala Paryaya Vedike urged the Government not to ignore the incident. The Trade Union Coordination Committee leader G.R. Shivashankar said that many government-run Balamandirs had no basic facilities. In many such institutions, children were treated as “jail inmates”, he said.
