Post-monsoon coffee production estimate in Kodagu scaled down

Madikeri: The post-monsoon estimate of coffee production in Kodagu during 2008-09, by the Coffee Board, has been put at 1,08,350 tonnes.

The post-monsoon estimate has been scaled down from the pre-monsoon estimate of 1,23,940 tonnes due to several factors. Coffee harvesting season is on in the district.

According to information received from the Coffee Board here, total production of Robusta variety coffee in the post-monsoon period is estimated to be 86,800 tonnes while that of Arabica variety is 21,550 tonnes.

The pre-monsoon estimate of Robusta production was 97,550 tonnes while that of Arabica was 26,390 tonnes. Robusta is a dominant crop in Madikeri and Virajpet taluks while Arabica variety is predominant in Somwarpet taluk.

During the beginning of this coffee season, a good crop was expected. But owing to unprecedented early “blossom rain” (rain which helps blossom in coffee plants) and also rain on the day of coffee blossom during March crop prospects were affected, following which post-monsoon estimate has been scaled down. The post-monsoon estimate of Robusta in Madikeri taluk is 20,700 tonnes while that of Arabica is 955 tonnes. The pre-monsoon estimate was 23,800 tonnes and 1,245 tonnes respectively. In the post-monsoon period, production of Arabica is expected to be down by 23 per cent while that of Robusta is likely to be down by 13 per cent.

In Virajpet taluk, the post-monsoon estimate of Robusta is 62,800 tonnes while Arabica is 1,495 tonnes. The pre-monsoon estimate was 69,000 tonnes and 1,645 tonnes respectively. Production of Robusta is likely to be down by 11 per cent while that Arabica is expected to be down by nine per cent.

In Somwarpet taluk, the post-monsoon estimate of Robusta is 4,300 tonnes while that of Arabica is 19,100 tonnes. The pre-monsoon estimate was 4,750 tonnes and 23,500 tonnes respectively. Robusta production in the post-monsoon period is likely to be down by 10 per cent while Arabica production is expected to be down by 19 per cent.

Area

Coffee is cultivated on 1,02,525 hectares of land in the three taluks — 74,495 hectares of land under Robusta variety and 28,030 hectares of land under Arabica variety.

In Madikeri taluk, Robusta is cultivated on 20,600 hectares of land and Arabica on 1,480 hectares of land. Robusta is cultivated on 49,120 hectares of land and Arabica on 1,910 hectares of land in Virajpet taluk. In Somwarpet taluk, the area of Robusta variety cultivation is 4,775 hectares while that of Arabica variety is 24,640 hectares.

Total bearing area in Kodagu is 96,790 hectares — 71,250 hecatres of Robusta and 25,540 hectares of Arabica. Robusta bearing area in Madikeri taluk is 19,450 hectares and Arabica is 1,430 hectares. In Virajpet taluk, bearing area of Robusta is 47,750 hectares and Arabica is 1,910 hectares. In Somwarpet taluk, the bearing area of Robusta is 4,050 hectares while that of Arabica is 22,200 hectares.

There are a total of 40,931 coffee growers in Kodagu, which stands first in the country coffee production.
