Police fire in air to disperse mob

Sirsi: Police fired in the air to disperse a mob at the Bharani polling station in Yellapur taluk, near here, coming under Yellapur Assembly segment of Uttara Kannada parliamentary constituency on Thursday .

Villagers of Bharani had decided to boycott polling. However, activists of political parties convinced them to vote on Wednesday night. Following this, people turned up at the polling station to exercise their franchise.

Annappa G. Naik of the village allegedly threatened to take the villagers back. But the voters did not listen to him.

Prevented

In the evening, Naik prevented the polling officials from carrying the ballot box out of the station.

This led to mob violence. Additional forces were sent from Yellapur and the police fired in the air to disperse the mob. Naik is absconding.

The ballot box was taken to Yellapur.
