Permission to catch two more elephants

Madikeri: The Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Bangalore, has granted permission to capture two more elephants in the Madikeri division of the Forest Department, according to information reaching here on Wednesday.

The Kodagu Conservator of Forests, G.A. Sudarshan, sought permission to catch four elephants in the Shanivarasante, Kodlipet, Hudgur, Umblibetta areas of Somwarpet taluk in the Madikeri division recently.

He had stated that people of the district were becoming restless in view of the elephant attacks that killed human beings and caused crop destructions.

He feared that the kin of those who were killed in elephant attacks recently might resort to agitations in protest against lack of steps to check the elephant menace and also the delay in the payment of crop compensations. They could have serious repercussions on the Forest Department, Mr. Sudarshan had stated. Following his request, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests issued the permission to catch two more elephants in the district.

The department has caught five elephants in the Dubare Reserve Forest areas in the Virajpet division since December 10, 2008. One elephant died during the operations.
