Davangere ZP CEO wants work done by June, rules out new initiatives for time being

Engineer cites power shortage for water supply problem

Farmers to get subsidy for purchase of tractors, equipment

DAVANGERE: Chief Executive Officer of the Davangere Zilla Panchayat Guthi Jamboonath has directed the Executive Engineer of the Panchayat Raj Engineering Department to complete at least five of the 11 projects under the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Drinking Water Supply Scheme by March-end. He also said that no fresh projects would be sanctioned unless the pending work was over.

At the Karnataka Development Programme review meeting held here on Friday, Mr. Jamboonath expressed disappointment over the slow progress in development work and asked the Executive Engineer, Surendra, to work overtime till the projects were over. He further said that all the 11 works should be completed by June this year.

Mr. Surendra, in reply, said the drinking water problem in many parts of the district was owing to the power shortage and not because of lack of water. There was enough water stored in overhead tanks and most borewells, he added and promised to ensure that the department completed the works by the deadline.

P. Ramanagowda, zilla panchayat member, discounted the claims of Mr. Surendra and said many villages in Harpanahalli and Jagalur taluks were facing a serious water problem.

He asked the official to visit the villages and make a factual study of the situation.

He also asked Mr. Surendra's subordinates to attend to the calls of zilla panchayat members, in apparent displeasure of his calls not being answered.

R.G. Gollar, Joint Director of Agriculture, said 30,000 tonnes of fertilizer had been stored for the coming season and added that the department would continue to give farmers subsidy for the purchase of tractors and agricultural implements.

President of the panchayat Halamma and vice-president Girigowda were present at the meeting.
