Monitor illegal de-addiction centres response

G.T. Narayanan of Jayanagar T. Block writes: Last week’s Public Eye on illegal de-addiction centres made a sad read.

These centres have mushroomed because of money and nobody keeps track of what is going on in them.

What is to be done? First of all, keep track of the money source. Then see whether formalities have been observed at the time of admission of an addict.

Subject all addicts to compulsory health check-up periodically. Separate the ‘redeemable’ from the ‘irredeemable’. Make visits by kith and kin compulsory. Make the inmates’ inspection mandatory by Social Welfare Department officials. Introduce yoga and moral lessons in all high schools and colleges.

Make a strong appeal through counselling to the parents to never drink and smoke in the presence of their children.
