Fusion music was rendered by Raagapella, a Stanford University band

MYSORE: Call it a new genre of fusion music that is a combination of Indian and Latin music. It is aptly called “Raagapella”: “raaga” which stands for melody and “A Capella” from Latin that refers to a style of music comprising only vocals.

People in Mysore savoured a slice of this unique fusion music rendered by a Stanford University band called Raagapella, here on Sunday.

All-men group

Held at the Central Food Technological Research and Training Institute (CFTRI) auditorium, the all-men group performed a repertoire of Indian classical, Bollywood pop, and a variety of other music drawn from different genres. The band which is on a tour of India, will perform in other cities including Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Bangalore.

The Mysore concert was presented by the Kannada Sahrudaya Balaga of the CFTRI in association with the Department of Kannada and Culture, Government of Karnataka.

Two-time winners of the National South Asian A Cappella Championship, the group has produced an album “Rags to Riches” that won them critical acclaim.

The group members say in their website, “… we seek to go back to our roots and do a tour of South Asia, performing to audiences across the subcontinent. As musical ambassadors from the United States, we seek to create a musical connection with South Asia, grow and learn while making our mark and expressing our unique perspective.”

The group came into being in 2002 at Stanford and was started by a few Indian students. Their musical ensemble includes instruments such as veena, violin, piano, guitar and flute. In September 2006, the group performed at the Hollywood Bowl along with A.R.Rahman and in June 2007 with Hariharan, Chitra, Sivamani among others.
