Bangalore: Amarnath (28), who was injured in police firing while he was trying to flee after allegedly snatching gold chains from two women near Ragigudda in J.P. Nagar on Monday night, was operated upon in a hospital here on Tuesday.

A bullet has been removed from his leg and the accused is said to be recovering.

Meanwhile, Amarnath’s brother Ravi, who managed to escape from the spot on his motorcycle, is still at large, according to the police.

The accused are residents of Electronics City. The police said that they were natives of Bagepalli and had allegedly snatched chains of several women, especially the elderly and students.

According to a police officer, Amarnath claimed that he was working in a garment unit on Bannerghatta Road. However, the garment authorities have denied his claim. A fake identity card of the garment unit had been recovered from Amarnath, the officer said.

The duo used to target women in the early hours of the day and in the night. They had sold or pledged several gold chains in Kolar and in the city and were leading a lavish life, according to the officer.

The police are on the look out for Ravi.

Meanwhile, members of a youth association visited J.P. Nagar Police Station on Tuesday morning and offered sweets to police personnel and thanked them for sending out a strong message to chain-snatchers by opening fire on them. They requested the police to take action against those who harass women.
