Man dies in police custody

BANGALORE: A 41-year-old habitual offender died in HAL police custody apparently due to an acute asthma attack on Tuesday morning.

While the post-mortem report is expected by Wednesday morning, a release from the Police Commissioner’s office said that the inquiry would be handed over to the Corps of Detectives (CoD) shortly.

The police said that Dorairaj, a resident of Magadi Road 8th Cross who was wanted in several cases, had been apprehended by the public and handed over to the police on Monday afternoon at Munne Kolala in HAL police station limits. Dorairaj was healthy when he was arrested, but complained of breathlessness on Tuesday morning. He died on the way while he was being taken to a private hospital, they said.

The police said that cases of burglary, house-breaking and theft had been registered against Dorairaj in Halasuru, HAL, Ramamurthynagar, Banaswadi, City Market, Cottonpet, Hebbagodi, Girinagar, R.T. Nagar and Madiwala police station limits, and that he had come out on bail only a month ago.

Sources said that Dorairaj had, in the past, spent 10 years in jail after being convicted in a murder case registered with Cottonpet police.

Following Dorairaj’s death, the HAL police registered a case of unnatural death and have termed it “custodial death.”

The inquest would be conducted by the Sub-divisional Magistrate.
