S.S. Malwad played a crucial role in protecting and developing Kannada language with his discipline and incisive writing, said writer Chennaveera Kanavi.

Speaking after inaugurating the birth centenary celebrations of Malwad, organised by the Chintana Samskrutika Balaga at Dr F.G. Halakatti Research Centre here on Sunday, he said Malwad played a prominent role in starting of the Karnataka University at Dharwad.

He had also been instrumental in setting up an All India Radio station at Dharwad. It was he who had convinced Kuvempu to preside over the Kannada Sahitya Sammelan at Dharwad in 1957, he said.

“The autobiography written by Malwad in 1989 is considered to be the best in Kannada language, even though he passed away before finishing the work. After his demise, his wife Shantadevi Malwad wrote more than 150 pages and completed the book,” he said.
