Logical prices for farm produce sought

Staff Correspondent

BIDAR: Kodihalli Chandrashekar, working president of the Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha (KRRS) on Tuesday demanded that the State Government announce appropriate prices for agricultural commodities to make farmers prosperous.

Addressing a gathering at a farmers’ convention that was part of “Sharana Samskruthi Utsav” organised by members of Basava Kendra, Bidar, Mr. Chandrashekar said that successive governments had not evinced interest in announcing logical prices for agricultural produce “which resulted in farmers’ suicides in the State over the years”. In the absence of reasonable prices, middlemen had the authority on fixing prices for the commodities and they made profits while farmer suffered loss for their produce, he said.

He said that successive State governments had not provided basic facilities to farmers and a World Bank survey had reported that by 2015, migration of rural people to urban areas would be very high. Farmers were in dire straits, he said and appealed to the State Government to help farmers.
