Lack of interest in Kannada medium bemoaned

Secretary of the National Education Society S.V. Thimmaiah said here on Thursday that Kannada-medium schools were withering away owing to lack of students.

Speaking as the chief guest at a programme to distribute uniforms to students of NES Primary School, Mr. Thimmaiah said students in urban areas chose not to study in Kannada-medium schools. It was only rural students and the poorer sections of society that studied in these schools, he said.

He gave the example of DVS Education Society that had opened a Kannada-medium primary school. However, there was only one teacher managing it, and not enough students.

Earlier, Manager of Pragati Grameena Bank G.R. Manjunath, who inaugurated the function, said the agriculture sector was losing its importance. Although the sector could create many job opportunities, the emphasis was on the industrial sector, he said.
