Kodagu Mahila Congress defends Veena Achaiah

Staff Correspondent

Madikeri city unit has demanded her removal

‘Not correct to criticise her alone for poll debacles’

Madikeri: President of the Kodagu Mahila Congress Deerghakeshi Shivanna has defended Kodagu District Congress Committee (KDCC) president Veena Achaiah saying that she (Ms. Achaiah) has steered the fortunes of the party successfully in the district since assuming charge.

Ms. Shivanna was addressing presspersons here on Tuesday.

The reaction of Ms. Shivanna and other office-bearers of the Mahila Congress came in the wake of the demand made by the Madikeri City Block Congress unit recently that change of guard at the KDCC was required as Ms. Achaiah had failed to ensure growth of the party in Kodagu.

They wanted an “able” candidate to be chosen for the job. The block Congress members had alleged that the party had lost all elections in Kodagu since Ms. Achaiah had become president of the district unit.

Ms. Shivanna said that Ms. Achaiah had been doing her job according to the directions of the party high command. Ms. Achaiah worked for the party as an ordinary worker and rose to the post of president of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat and to the post of KDCC president on her own strength and capacity, Ms. Shivanna said and added that it was not correct to criticise her alone for election debacles in the district.

In fact, every Congress worker should do introspection over the sagging fortunes of the party, said Rajamma Rudrayya, vice-president of the zilla panchayat.

What was needed for the Congress at this juncture was unity and commitment to ensure victory of the party at all levels, she said. Mr. Shivanna and other Mahila Congress office-bearers, Srimati Bangera, Padmini and Geeta Basappa appealed to senior leaders of the party and all workers to extend support to Ms. Achaiah to rejuvenate the party in the district.
