‘Police are favouring BJP MLAs and leaders in the district’

Madikeri: Kodagu Congress members led by president of the unit Veena Achaiah on Tuesday staged a protest against the style of functioning of the B.S. Yeddyurappa Government in the State. They accused the Government of failing on all fronts.

Administration in Kodagu had come under the grip of the BJP, V.P. Shashidhar, member of the Kodagu Zilla Panchayat, alleged.

The members raised slogans in front of the office of the Deputy Commissioner here. The State Government had promised to provide rice at Rs. 2 a kg and free electricity, but did not keep it, Mr. Shashidhar alleged.

Mr. Shashidhar accused the police of favouring the BJP MLAs and functionaries in Kodagu. As a result, innocent Congress workers were being targeted by the police. Congress workers were being sent back from police stations if they went there to lodge complaints.

Even false cases of timber smuggling were being registered against the adivasis living in and around Kutta, Chennayanakote and Thithimathi just because they were Congress workers, Mr. Shashidhar said.

The police had failed to arrest those who had murdered a Congress worker at Betoli in Virajpet recently, he said.

Ms. Achaiah said that the Congress would stage demonstrations in front of the police stations if the police continued to harass the party workers.

Copies of the memorandum addressed to the Governor have been sent to the Prime Minister, Union Home Minister, Chief Minister, State Home Minister, Director General of Police, Mysore-Kodagu MP and the Superintendent of Police.

The former president of the Kodagu zilla panchayat Deerghakeshi Shivanna, senior Congress leader N. Mahabaleshwar Bhat, and party functionaries K.M. Ganesh, Neravanda Umesh, B.S. Thammaiah and V.P. Suresh participated in the protest.
