Kharge says he has the ambition to become Chief Minister of Karnataka

‘I am not angling for any ministerial berth’

Gulbarga: Senior Congress leader M. Mallikarjun Kharge was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency on Saturday. He said he had the ambition to become the Chief Minister of the State.

Addressing presspersons immediately after accepting the certificate from the Returning Officer of the Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency K.S. Satyamurthy, he said he would submit his resignation from the State Assembly shortly. Mr. Kharge dedicated his victory to “honest and dedicated party workers who toiled day and night for the victory of the party in the constituency” and added that although the margin of the victory was low, “winning the election was more important than looking at the margin”.

In reply to another query on the reverses of the party in the Lok Sabha polls, Mr. Kharge said the party would analyse the reasons for the party’s poor performance in the State. “The party which has performed well in almost all the States, has unfortunately suffered serious reverses in Karnataka and this would be analysed in detail after the election at the highest level,” he said.

Asked whether he would be rewarded with a place in the Union Ministry, Mr. Kharge quipped, “I am not angling for any ministerial berth, it is left to the party high command”.

He promised that he would strive hard to fulfil the long-standing demands of the region.
