Migratory birds have arrived here in large numbers

MYSORE: The picturesque Karanji Lake Nature Park here has come alive with a congregation of birds. Pelicans and cormorants that have descended here find the lake environs a perfect place to roost, nestle and breed.

This time around, the arrival of migratory birds has been delayed compared to last year. They started coming in by the beginning of March last time.

Copious rain

Thanks to copious rain last year, the lake water has remained more or less intact, thus making it a perfect spot for bird watchers, picnickers and nature lovers.

The birds have nestled on trees near the lake. Besides pelicans and cormorants, egrets, herons, ibis and sunbird can also be found in the lake environs.

But once the southwest monsoon sets in, the number of migratory birds is likely to dwindle.

Prime tourist spots

The Karanji lake has transformed into one of the prime tourist spots in the city. In the past five years, it has been enriched with new features to draw visitors.

The turnout of tourists here has been overwhelming this year since there is no boating facility in and around the city other than the Karanji lake.

With the enrichment of the “walk-through aviary”, the country’s biggest aviary, the place has become a favourite destination to unwind.

For children, it is more than an amusement park as the place promises wholesome entertainment in the midst of nature.

The recently developed kids play zone for children aged below 10 and newly-laid lawns are the other attractions at the park.
