Kannada meet in April or May

Staff Correspondent

HUBLI: Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S. Mahadev Prasad has said that the Vishwa Kannada Sammelan in Belgaum is likely to be held in April or May.

Taking to presspersons here on Saturday during his first visit to Hubli after becoming a Minister, he said the committee headed by the Chief Minister would decide when the sammelan would be held.

He said the literary convention had been put off because of the developments after the final award of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal was announced. He dismissed allegations that the convention was put off because proper arrangements had not been made.

The Minister said no organisation or association, including the Kannada Sahitya Parishat, had been ignored while making arrangements for the convention. The Vishwa Kannada Sammelan was not a programme of the Kannada Sahitya Parishat but one organised by the State Government.

The event would be organised with the involvement of all organisations associated with the Kannada literary field, he said.

Asked about officials interviewing senior artistes to decide whether they were eligible for honorarium, the Minister said he would look into the matter.

Controversy

On the reported statement by the Director of the State Information Department on the order of the Cauvery tribunal, the Minister said there was a need for the officials to follow a self-imposed code of conduct in such matters. They should not interfere in issues that are not related to their department. However, the Commissioner had issued a clarification on the matter, he said.
