Special Correspondent

It will be set up on Lashkar Police Station premises

MYSORE: A Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU) will be established in Mysore to handle cases related to children in conflict with the law.

Anthony Sebastian, advocate and executive director of Echo Center for Juvenile Justice, said in a press release that the unit, which had the motto “better rehabilitation”, would be inaugurated on Wednesday.

Commissioner of Police, Mysore, Parashivamurthy, will be the chief guest. This is the third juvenile police unit to be established in the State and the second in coordination with Echo (Empowerment of Children and Human Rights Organisation), a Bangalore-based non-governmental organisation (NGO).

The release pointed out that the Juvenile Justice Act, 2000, had provided for NGOs to be partners with specially trained police to work in SJPU which will offer specialised services to children in conflict with the law and offer them care and protection.

The SJPU will be set up on the Lashkar Police Station premises and will have jurisdiction over entire Mysore district.

There are also plans to launch a helpline on the SJPU premises for children in distress, according to Dr. Sebastian.
