Winnability to be the only criterion for selecting the candidates

Kumaraswamy not averse to contesting

Lok Sabha polls

BANGALORE: The former Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has said that the Janata Dal (Secular) will go it alone in the coming Lok Sabha elections with the party deciding to field candidates in all the 28 seats in the State.

Speaking to presspersons after blessing the 203 couples who tied the knot at a mass marriage ceremony organised by party MLA B.Z. Zameer Ahmed Khan here on Sunday, Mr. Kumaraswamy, who is also president of Karnataka unit of the Janata Dal (Secular), said the party had finalised the candidates for 15 Lok Sabha constituencies and the list would be announced in the next 10 days.

“We will officially release the list of candidates on an auspicious date in the next 10 days,” he said.

Mr. Kumaraswamy said the Janata Dal (Secular) would not be entering into any poll understanding with the Congress in Karnataka as the party was already part of the Third Front at the national level.

The Janata Dal (Secular) said “winnability” was the only criterion on which the party was selecting candidates for the Lok Sabha polls. “We will not take caste or any other factor into consideration at the time of choosing the candidates,” he said.

Contesting polls

Mr. Kumaraswamy did not rule out the possibility of contesting the elections from any of the Lok Sabha constituency in the State. He said the party was “seriously considering” a proposal to field Mr. Khan from Bangalore Central, a newly-carved out parliamentary constituency in the city. “But, he is averse to entering the fray if the former Union Minister C.K. Jaffer Sharief also chooses to contest from the same constituency,” he said.

Earlier, addressing the gathering Mr. Khan said he had organised the mass marriage ceremony out of concern for the poor who were unable to spend money on weddings and not for “political gains”.

The 203 couples, who entered wedlock on Sunday, would be sent on an all-expenses-paid “honeymoon” to Ooty in batches of 35 each from February 10 to March 2.

The former Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy, MLA Balakrishna and founder of Al Ameen Movement Mumtaz Ahmed Khan were among those who blessed the couples.
