Janata Dal (S) candidate accuses the officer

of favouring BJP

‘He tried to prevent the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda from campaigning’

TUMKUR: The Janata Dal (Secular) on Monday demanded that the returning officer for the Turuvekere Assembly constituency in Tumkur district be changed.

Protest

Led by Janata Dal (Secular) candidate M.T. Krishnappa, the party workers laid siege to the Turuvekere taluk offices complex, where the office of H. Basavarajendra, Assistant Commissioner of Tiptur Revenue Subdivision and returning officer, is temporarily located.

Mr. Krishnappa said that Mr. Basavarajendra had been discriminating against the Janata Dal (Secular).

He said: “On December 19, Mr. Basavarajendra tried to prevent the former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda from campaigning in Turuvekere taluk though permission had been sought for it.”

“On December 20, the official treated me badly and made me wait for several hours for a meeting with him. Even the official’s subordinate staff misbehaved with me and other Janata Dal (Secular) leaders,” Mr. Krishnappa said.

‘Friendly’

Mr. Krishnappa alleged that Mr. Basavarajendra was “friendly” with the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders, especially the Ministers camping in Turuvekere.

“There are many instances of the returning officer ignoring complaints against the Bharatiya Janata Party leaders,” he said.

Balaram Sharma, Central observer, however, said that he did not receive any complaint against Mr. Basavarajendra or any request for changing him as the returning officer from any political party.

‘Wrong’

Mr. Krishnappa said Mr. Sharma was not available to lodge a complaint against Mr. Basavarajendra. Mr. Sharma’s telephone numbers given to the public by the district election office were “wrong”, he added.
