Party meet today to drum up support for Anita Kumaraswamy

TUMKUR: The News that Janata Dal (Secular) is considering fielding Anita Kumaraswamy, wife of the former Chief Minister and president of the State unit, H.D. Kumaraswamy, in the byelection to the Assembly from Madhugiri constituency has stirred up political activity in Tumkur district.

Elaborate arrangements are being made for a meeting of Janata Dal (S) workers and supporters at the Lal Bahadur Shastry Open Stadium at Madhugiri on Sunday. It is being organised to seek the approval of local leaders, workers and supporters of the party to the candidature of Ms. Anita Kumaraswamy.

The former Prime Minister and JD(S) president H.D. Deve Gowda is scheduled to inaugurate the meeting. The party workers are, however, disappointed by reports that Ms. Anita Kumaraswamy would not attend the meeting.

The JD(S) organised a protest rally in Tumkur on Saturday criticising the BJP Government for its “failure” to manage the power crisis and solve the people’s problems.

Meanwhile, the JD(S) move to field Ms. Anita Kumaraswamy seems to have come as a surprise to the BJP and the Congress. The BJP and the Congress have decided to field the former Minister C. Chennigappa, and the former MLA K.N. Rajanna, respectively, from Madhugiri. It is said that the two parties may look for “stronger candidates” to take on Ms. Anita Kumaraswamy. The Congress, however, seems to be firm on fielding Mr. Rajanna, though some leaders in the party said: “Channakeshava, a confidant of the former Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, would be considered. Mr. Channakeshava (26) is a realtor.
